For an outsider, unlimited data in Singapore may seem expensive. Others may consider it priced fairly while for very few, it may appear inexpensive. As we started focusing more on services, streaming, and social media, our usage habits changed which is why we now have dedicated plans with unlimited data. If you had the curiosity to look around at various offers, you may have noticed a few things.

Prepaid or Contract?

This is the first question that you need to ask yourself. There are two main options to get unlimited data in Singapore. The first and most common option is to get it on a contract. You get a base plan that includes unlimited data, paying the same monthly subscription for 12 or 24 months.

The second option is to get a prepaid card and activate an unlimited data package. This can be a cost-effective method to have unlimited data because it can be canceled, or better said, you can stop activating the option at any given time.

Another option is to get an additional package on top of your base plan to enable unlimited data traffic. If you pay a lot for your base plan, it may not be the most cost-effective way to do it. What you could do is cancel your existing contract, if that is an option for you, and get a new, cheap base plan. On top of that base plan, you can add an unlimited data package. You can expect to pay anywhere between S$20 and S$35 for unlimited data, varying from one carrier to another. Because each carrier has its own price plans, it may be worth it to compare multiple offers, especially if you do not care much about staying with the same carrier and want to save some money in the process.

There Are Some Caveats Though

Unlimited data may not be unlimited in the way you would think. Depending on the policy of each carrier, they may decide to limit your transfer speeds. For example, you could get the first 100 GB of data at LTE/4G speed and the rest of the traffic to be limited to 3G speeds. The upside is that you do not get charged a cent for the traffic you use beyond that 100 GB and 3G speeds are fairly decent. You can watch 1080p videos on YouTube with 3G.

In real-life use cases, you would rarely exceed 100 GB of data. If you need more than that, there are plans for unlimited data in Singapore that include 200 GB or more at 4G speeds. You will have to pay more but this ensures that you are getting more traffic at higher speeds. What you could do is test your usage, see if you need more than 100 GB, and then upgrade your plan again if you are comfortable with paying extra. If you go for such an extra option on your plan, keep in mind that you can also cancel it and pay for just your base plan. You will not get blocked for the remainder of your contract with unlimited data that you may not need in the future.
